Hello! I am reviewing the first book in the series for the blog tour. The second book review follows this posting. Read on to know more!
Title : CURSED by FIRE
Author : Danielle Annett
Series : Blood & Magic #1
Genre : Urban Fantasy
Released: Jan 28, 2015
Blurb :
It has been six years since the Awakening and peace in Spokane, Washington is still tenuous at best. The vampires and shifters are all vying for control of the city and the humans seem to be the ones suffering the consequences, or so it seems. Aria Naveed has spent the last two years of her life fighting to make the many wrongs of the world right, but soon finds out that the humans aren’t as weak as they appear and may be a more terrifying foe than any of the other races combined. When a stranger rolls into town with trouble on his heels, Aria finds herself trapped in the middle of a battle that could cost her more than she has bargained for as a fight for justice turns into an unexpected fight for her life.
My Musings :
It was a good start to a new series and a new author.
When I first started the book, I felt like I had landed headlong into the midst of a series. The characters and the storyline was structured that way without any good background information at the beginning. But as I continued reading I was able to put together the image of the tale. Then it was a very fast read indeed!
The story was fast paced and kept me occupied with the happenings at every level. I felt that the book was very short and I would have preferred it to be a bit longer to get to know the characters better. The flow of the tale was without any glitch and I enjoyed it till the end.
The characters weren't one dimensional and I loved getting to know them with their strengths and weaknesses. Everyone had a purpose to their existence and I was able to keep up with their stories. Aria was my type of heroine full of spirit and sass while I haven't figured out who is supposed to be the hero. It might be James with his playboy charm or Inarus with his sexy magnetism or Declan with his power. I am going to enjoy reading the sequel figuring it out!
Another thought which occurred to me as the story progressed was that the tale was very similar in aspect with Kate Daniels series. But not all were parallel elements and there were a few differences. This familiarity actually made me enjoy it a bit. So I can myself continuing the series.
My one line review : A short fast paced urban fantasy with the usual elements.
My rating : 4/5
My reread factor : 3/5
