Book Blitz - Oath Forger by Nia Mars

Oath Forger
Nia Mars
(Oath Forger #1)
Publication date: February 27th 2018
Genres: Adult, Romance, Science Fiction
I’m a scavenger. So what? With society’s collapse on Earth, I do what I have to for survival. Especially after I’m kidnapped by space pirates. I have no idea why the five most powerful rulers in the universe decide that I’m the Oath Forger, the one foretold to fuse their royal houses together and bring peace. But I’m going to play along. Because, hey, it’s better than probes in uncomfortable places. Now let’s just hope they don’t find out I’m lying.

The complete series:

EXCERPT:
“My Ava,” Tiam says, dreamily. “Yes, you will be mine tomorrow in Merim.”
“You mean you hope I’ll accept you?”
“Yes.”
Maybe part of being an Oath Forger is that I have to pick a husband from among The Five? Easy. I’ll pick whoever is willing to return me home.
I eye Tiam for potential. No harm in feeling him out just a little. “If I asked you a favor, to help me do something, would you?”
“I would give my life for you, my Ava,” he says without blinking.
He opens his mouth to say more, but suddenly the connection is severed, and I’m looking at a blank screen. I know I didn’t hang up on him, and I’m pretty sure he didn’t hang up on me.
The next second, Koah bursts through the door. His eyes are wild; he leaps for me and grabs me by the shoulders, searching my face. “What did he do? Are you all right?”
“Um, we talked?” I roll my eyes. “Chill.”
When I pull back, he lets me go with great reluctance. He asks through gritted teeth, “What did he tell you?”
“He wanted me to transport to his ship.”
Koah is nearly cross-eyed with outrage. He looks as if the top of his head is about to blow off.
“I said no.”
He is breathing heavily. “Thank you, Ava.” Then he calms, gathers himself, and his breathing evens. “What else did you tell him?”
“Not much. We only talked for five minutes.”
He looks as if he wants to grab me and wrap his arms around me, but he holds himself back. After another few seconds, seeing that I am all right, he calms down some more.
Then a speculative gleam comes into his eyes. “Were you in my bed when Tiam appeared on the display?”
Really? Seriously?
“No.”
Is that a disappointed grunt?
I can’t stop myself from saying, “If you’d like, the next time he calls, I can chat with him while sitting in the middle of the bed, naked.”
Koah looks so poleaxed, I regret teasing him.
“Ava.” His voice is hoarse. “You would take your clothes off for Tiam, but not for me?” He sounds as if his heart is bleeding.

Blog Tour / Book Musings - Jinxed by Thommy Hutson

Jinxed
Thommy Hutson
Publication date: March 13th 2018
Genres: Horror, Thriller, Young Adult
High School Can Be a Real Killer
Break a mirror
Walk under a ladder
Step on a crack

Innocent childhood superstitions …
But someone at the secluded Trask Academy of Performing Arts is taking things one deadly step further when the campus is rocked with the deaths of some of its star students.
Layna Curtis, a talented, popular senior, soon realizes that the seemingly random, accidental deaths of her friends aren’t random—or accidents—at all. Someone has taken the childhood games too far, using the idea of superstitions to dispose of their classmates. As Layna tries to convince people of her theory, she uncovers the terrifying notion that each escalating, gruesome murder leads closer to its final victim: her.
Will Layna’s opening night also be her final bow?

My Musings :

I have been recently interested in mysteries and thrillers. So when I saw this book, I was interested to know what's it all about. The blurb was catchy with the words "supersitions" and "deaths". My mind instantly imagined a story full of horror movie cliches.

So when I started reading the book and realised that there are scenes which echo my thoughts, I was happy and thrilled. Though I yell at the characters in movies where they are on the verge of doing something stupid like going where they shouldn't etc., I loved reading about that type of situations. I loved nearly banging my head against the wall and biting my nails in tension and suspense.

The starting instantly had my attention and when Layna goes on to try to figure out the reason, I was thrilled with the suspense part and the imagery formed by the author's words is perfect for the imagination and that imagination is what makes this read a darkly enticing one with gruesome details.

But what I didn't like about the story is that none of the characters stood out. They were lost in the plot. The pace was perfect for the setting and I loved spending the time reading the book, especially since I am a horror/slasher movie lover with the peeking between the fingers syndrome.

For all the lovers of horror out there, you are in a treat with this book!

I received a copy voluntarily to review the book. This doesn't impact the thoughts on it in any way.

My one line review : A perfectly thrilling horror movie-like story.

My rating : 4.5/5

My reread factor : 3/5

My Musings :

The author dropped me right into the tempestuous affair of Sophie and Brett. I have always enjoyed her books so it was a foregone conclusion that I will love this one too only how much I would being the questioning factor.

It was easy to get lost in the story from the beginning. The story starts with Brett and Sophie's hide and seek game of Brett trying to get Sophie into his bed. In the starting it felt like I was missing the backstory of the pair but as it proceeded, I didn't have any problem understanding the flow of the story.

Though the story's spotlight seems to be on Brett, I believe I loved Sophie better. Don't mistake me! I liked Brett because he is sweet and hot. But what stole the attention was Sophie with her strong persona and determination to stick with her ideals. Another strong point was the supporting cast with a good family vibe.

The romance felt pretty straightforward and it was very sweet and flirty. It was also super hot from the beginning. The story's pace was just right for their romance and I loved the swoon worthy scenes. I am going to hanker now for the other books I believe. I am so curious about the other pairings!

I recommend the author's books not just this one for all contemporary romance lovers.

I received a copy for reviewing purposes which doesn't impact my review in any way.

My one line review : A super hot romance with loveable characters.

My rating: 4.5/5

My reread factor : 3/5

Book Blitz - The Grown-ups' Crusade by Audrey Greathouse

The Grown Ups’ Crusade
Audrey Greathouse
(The Neverland Wars #3)
Published by: Clean Teen Publishing
Publication date: March 27th 2018
Genres: Fairy Tales, Fantasy, Young Adult
Gwen has returned to Neverland with Peter Pan and the lost children, but this time, the adults are following close behind.
The Anomalous Activity Department has plans to finally conquer Neverland by bringing the final battle to the vulnerable island. The children will have to rally fairies, mermaids, and allies from other magical realms to stand a chance against the shadow-casting army of grown-ups heading for them.
The black-coat soldiers are far from their only problem. Lasiandra is missing. No one has seen her since Gwen left her at the lakeside with Jay, and the mermaids searching have found only grave omens in the stars. With the island on the cusp of a war that threatens to strip the land of its magic, the last thing Peter and Gwen need is the ancient flagship that appears on their horizon, sailing pirates straight for their shores.
When the battle begins amid old and new enemies, Gwen’s maturity will be a double-edged sword. She will either grow stronger or grow up… maybe both.

EXCERPT:

Gwen gathered fruit as fast as she could in the dim of the early morning. Mangos and marionberries, peaches and papayas, star fruit and oranges… she shoved the land fruit into her bag, never breaking pace as she trekked weast across the island. She needed to get to the coast and back before any fairies awoke. The entire fairy population had indulged in joyful revelries the night before, celebrating some amorphous holiday unknown to humans. The dawn would find even the most temperate fairies still lolling in drunken dreams and merry slumber. But dawn had not yet arrived and not everyone slept; stars still speckled the bluing sky and certain inhabitants of Neverland were still speaking with them.
Tromping over vines and fungi, Gwen bushwhacked her way through the forest-jungle on anxious feet. The mermaids had not been helpful as of late.
The new mermaids she’d met wouldn’t even give her their names. Eglantine and Cynara had been snide at best, and contemptuous at worst. Gwen wouldn’t have minded it—she didn’t care what mermaids thought of her—but she felt certain they knew what had happened to Lasiandra and refused to explain. This drowsy morning offered her a chance to tempt them with an overabundance of land fruit without anyone noticing. She would persuade the mermaids to cede their starry secrets and hurry back before any stray fairy or curious child found her at the incriminating lagoon.
Gwen reached the wood’s end and hurried down the steps carved into the chalky cliff face. She moved so fast she half-flew toward the slender figures half-submerged in the lagoon.
Gwen had not seen Lasiandra since the night she escaped with Jay from Lake Agana. In the chaos, she had never retrieved the scale from Lasiandra, and thus lost her ability to call her friend. She hadn’t worried about it—until days and weeks passed without sight of her at the lagoon.
“What business have you with Lasiandra?” Eglantine had demanded last time Gwen visited. “What matter is she to you?”
“I’m just worried about her,” Gwen had answered, innocent and truthful. The region’s entire Anomalous Activity Department had been on duty that night, trying to apprehend lost children and capture whatever magic followed them. Lasiandra’s disappearance was ominous, to say the least. A few fairies had not returned from the mission, and there was no question of what fate had befallen them.
In response, the mermaids had only mocked her, contorting their melodic voices into cackling imitations of her land-dwelling accent, “I’m just worried about her.”
“Worried about her! Concerned about a mermaid?” Cynara had declared, insulted and amused. “We are not of such a feeble nature as you landmaids. Mermaids have more strength in a single scale than you have in all of your heart. You need not worry for a mermaid, girl. We can take care of ourselves.”
Gwen had wanted to believe her.

Blog Tour / Book Musings - The Invisible Hand by James Hartley

The Invisible Hand

The Invisible Hand is about a boy, Sam, who has just started life at a boarding school and finds himself able to travel back in time to medieval Scotland. There he meets a girl, Leana, who can travel to the future, and the two of them become wrapped up in events in Macbeth, the Shakespeare play, and in the daily life of the school. The book is the first part of a series called Shakespeare´s Moon. Each book is set in the same boarding school but focuses on a different Shakespeare play.
Purchase from Amazon.com https://www.amazon.com/Invisible-Hand-Shakespeares-Moon-Act-ebook/dp/B01N4R541U/

My Musings :

The first thing which caught my attention was the time travel concept of the story and the second point was the name, Shakespeare. After that I was intrigued and wondering how the author would incorporate both in the same story. It was different and seemed to not mesh when thought of so I was pretty curious.

The story includes the boarding school concept too so that's another point which had my interest from the beginning. The starting was a bit slow with Sam's school life with a bit of time travel thrown in.Then Leana came into the picture and it kind of started to get surprising with the meshing of time frames. I quite enjoyed the Macbeth addition. It was fun revisiting the tale.

The story is a composite of romance, adventure and mystery. Overall the pace was a bit slow in my opinion while the plot was well written. This is a perfect book for teenagers and it would help them to get into the Macbeth story.

I am quite curious how the other books will be played out in the series now. It's a different take on the classic Macbeth tale. The author has made it interesting with addition of different fantastical themes to it. It is altogether a pleasant reading.

I received a copy for reviewing purposes which doesn't impact my review in any way.

My one line review : A fantastical take on the classic Macbeth.

My rating : 4/5

My reread factor : 3.5/5

James was born on the Wirral, England, in 1973 on a rainy Thursday. He shares his birthday with Bono, Sid Vicious and two even nastier pieces of work, John Wilkes Booth and Mark David Chapman.

His mother was a hairdresser with her own business and his father worked in a local refinery which pours filth into the sky over the Mersey to this day. They married young and James was their first child. He has two younger brothers and a still-expanding family in the area. As an Everton fan he suffered years of Liverpool success throughout the seventies and was thrilled when his father took a job in Singapore and the family moved lock, stock and two smoking barrels to Asia.

Blog Tour / Book Musings - Halloween Nightmare by Rena Marin and Skylar McKinzie

Halloween Nightmare
Dead Oaks Terrors Book 1
by Rena Marin & Skylar McKinzie
Genre:Thriller, Suspense

Welcome to Dead Oaks.

The New Home of Fear!

Something strange is happening in the sleepy, little, town of Dead Oaks, N.C. Tales of disappearances, strange deaths, murder, and mayhem have been passed down through the town’s history and are now used as scary tales to keep local children behind locked doors at night. Still, it all continues. Whatever sinister force that has its claws into Dead Oaks is still there, and it wants nothing more than to claim the town as its own.

Six Years Ago

Hikers, campers, and even locals had been disappearing around Dead Oaks Lake. Some claimed the ghost of a local man who went missing years before was the reason. During a neighborly camping get together, Tiffany Sellers vanished in the middle of the night. Mia Evans was the only witness. What she saw that night sent her family far from Dead Oaks in hopes of escaping the evil surrounding the town.

Present Day

Mia, and her twin sister Tia have come back to their family’s cabin by the lake. Their hopes? To finally put the past behind them and reconnect with old friends for a Halloween bash to remember. As an unexpected snow storm strands the twins and their friends, they find themselves fighting to survive not only the storm but whatever is haunting the lake. Soon they realize, in Dead Oaks, sometimes the past should just stay buried.

**Only .99 cents!**
Goodreads * Amazon

The starting was on the point with a good amount of mystery and thrill. And then the way it proceeds had me intrigued.

When Mia and Tia go back for a bash, I nearly banged my head against the wall. It was such a cliche! The action started from there and I had a good time reading with bated breath and wide eyes. It was such a short read but it was a read worth the time. I went through lots of emotions in that short time.

From the get go, I was left guessing who was behind the disappearances and murders. Sometimes, it felt like a horror and other times like a thriller. But overall, it covered all the points to make a mysterious story. I loved the paranormal ghostly twist to it and I wasn't totally expecting the identity of the culprit. I felt that the authors could have given more clues in trying to figure it out.

All in all, it was a good gory read with all the slasher action. It had me going "Ooooo" and "Ohhhh" and "Ouch" and "Nooooooo" in turns. It had me gasping and groaning with the characters' actions. I enjoyed it and I am sure that if you want a short thrilling tale, this one is for you!

I received a copy for reviewing purposes. This doesn't have any effect on my review.

My one line review : A story with enough thrill and surprise for a good read.

My rating : 4/5

My reread factor : 3.5/5

The target audience is the youngsters, children, who don’t know all that much about Indian mythology. It’s also for those parents who are keen to read aloud stories to their children and are looking for suitable books on mythology.

It would be great if you can add this book to your TBR

This is the first foray into the mythology genre for the author and also the first book that she's written for children.

Sundari Venkatraman is an indie author who has 26 titles to her name, all Top 100 Bestsellers on Amazon India, Amazon USA, Amazon UK, Amazon Canada and Amazon Australia in both romance as well as Asian Drama categories. Her latest hot romances have all been on #1Bestseller slot in Amazon India for over a month.

Even as a kid, Sundari absolutely loved the ‘lived happily ever after’ syndrome as she grew up reading all the fairy tales she could lay her hands on, Phantom comics, Mandrake comics and the like. It was always about good triumphing over evil and a happy end.

Soon, into her teens, Sundari switched her attention from fairy tales to Mills & Boon. While she loved reading both of these, she kept visualising what would have happened if there were similar situations happening in India; to a local hero and heroine. Her imagination took flight and she always lived in a rosy cocoon of romance over the years.

Then came the writing – a true bolt out of the blue! And Sundari Venkatraman has never looked back.
