Book Review - Life's Forever Changed by Anne Stone

Title : Life's Forever Changed
Author : Anne Stone
Series : The Show me #0.5
Genre : Contemporary Romance
Source : Bought on Amazon

Blurb:

After Alejandro Alvarez’s best friend dies of kidney disease while in high school, Alejandro vows to change his life. Determined to help others suffering from his friend’s illness, he rejects joining his father’s pediatrics practice and instead trains as a nephrologist and a transplant surgeon. Fourteen years later, devotion to his career has rewarded him with a reputation as an excellent surgeon, but success has left him alone, with no family that he can call his own.

Pediatric Intensive Care Nurse Tammy Johansen is on duty when an infant must undergo a life-saving transplant. Working closely with famed surgeon Dr. Alejandro Alvarez, she sees the sensitive, lonely man beneath his professional exterior and wonders can such a man be interested in someone like her?

As they battle to save the tiny patient, Alejandro struggles with the emptiness within himself until the lovely and compassionate nurse at his side catches his attention. In that moment, one look at Tammy forever changes his life.

Life’s Forever Changed is the prequel to Anne Stone’s Show Me series.

My Musings :

When I started the book, I went in with a lot of expectations. I knew it's a prequel of sorts so it was very short and just took a few hours to finish the book in one sitting. But I was getting distracted while reading. The main reason was that it was a pretty straight forward love story.

The story went like this - Tammy and Alejandro both know each other and fall in love with each other suddenly. I felt it was rather sudden and other than that, I was okay with the tale since it was fun getting to know them both in detail. Yes, they were well planned characters. And that kept the tedium to the minimum.

The title hinted at something which would lead to major change. What I envisioned was totally opposite to what the change was. That was one twist which made reading the story worth it. And another thing was it was not riddled with passionate scenes. It was wholesome. That was another big plus in my opinion.

So I am actually interested enough to read Alejandro's main story now but as for continuing the series, I am not 100% sure.

My one line review : A pretty straight forward love story.

My rating : 3.5/5

My reread factor : 2.5/5

Blurb:

Who knew sleeping with the enemy could be this fun?

Was the one night stand a good idea?

Well, no. Probably not in retrospect.

In my defense I had just moved back into my grandparent’s house, I’d lost my dream job, and a guy on Tinder had stood me up. It was like life had suddenly stamped ‘LOSER’ on my forehead.

So when the guy behind the bar started giving me THE look…you know, the one that promised I’d be screaming his name into the wee hours of the morning? When that guy also has the perfect amount of scruff on his chiseled chin, biceps bulging out of his t-shirt, and a cocky grin you knew he’d earned in the sack…when he gives you that look, you don’t bother to figure out what your six degrees of separation are. You jump on that horse and ride it!

Pun fully and completely intended. And accurate by the way.

I fully admit to feeling sorry for myself and acting impulsively, but by the time I’d figured out WHO the bartender was, I was already falling for him.

** Note: This book was previously titled "The Bartender". Same great story with a fresh new look.**

MY MUSINGS :

I have always enjoyed the author's romances. The small town charm and the down to earth characters always entertain me with their stories. So I was sure that this one was not going to be an exception.

I feel this novella is a power packed read because it has everything to make a super read. It has the small town feel along with well developed characters. Yes, though it is short, the characters are sufficiently fleshed out to do justice to their roles, especially the protagonists.

Charlotte is a strong heroine and she has to be, for going through all she has in her past and her present. By the end of the book, she is even better, standing up for herself. Matt is so enmeshed into the town he has adopted as his own that he feels like an extension of it. And that's why though I didn't meet many people from the town, they infused into each scene just with their vague presence in the background.

The story is fast enough with few twists which adds to the enjoyment of the tale. I enjoyed reading all about it. And yeah, I can't resist making it a 5 star rating because of the warmth and fun got from the story.

I received a copy for reviewing purposes which doesn't impact my review in any way.

My one line review : A complete small town romance in a tiny book.

My rating : 5/5

Blog Tour / Book Review - Murder on the Lake of Fire by Mikel J Wilson

Murder on the Lake of Fire
Mikel J. Wilson
(Mourning Dove Mysteries, #1)
Published by: Acorn Publishing
Publication date: December 1st 2017
Genres: LGBTQ+, Mystery, Romance
At twenty-three and with a notorious case under his belt, Emory Rome has already garnered fame as a talented special agent for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. His career is leapfrogging over his colleagues, but the jumping stops when he’s assigned a case he fought to avoid – to investigate an eerie murder in the Smoky Mountain hometown he had abandoned. This mysterious case of a dead teen ice-skater once destined for the pros is just the beginning. In a small town bursting with envious friends and foes, Rome’s own secrets lie just below the surface. The rush to find the murderer before he strikes again pits Rome against artful private investigator, Jeff Woodard. The PI is handsome and smart, seducing Rome and forcing him to confront childhood demons, but Woodard has secrets of his own. He might just be the killer Rome is seeking.

My Musings :

The story started with a bang. The starting chapter itself was attention grabbing and then it got better as the story went on. I love murder mysteries and this was no exception. What really had me interested was the especially unique method of killing. Maybe there are other books based on it, but this is the first time I am reading a mystery with such killings. This seemed more brutal and heartless than a bullet or a knife kill.

The killing weapon, if we can call it, had me wanting to know the motive and the killer's identity. And the author kept me guessing till the end. I really couldn't point at any specific person  as the killer since each character seemed to have secrets of their own. So it was addictive, reading on to the end in suspense.

The main characters were well developed and the side characters too were formed well enough to sustain their roles. I wasn't expecting romance so the side plot of attraction between Jeff and Rome was surprising but it integrated well into the plot. So I am expecting to know how it plays out in the future books.

The ending had me feeling incomplete. Though it solved the mystery and all was explained, I was expecting more. But the last few pages had me thinking that maybe, there would an extension of sorts in one of the sequels. Maybe.. Maybe not.. But I sure am looking forward to reading the other books when they are released.

I received a copy for reviewing purposes which doesn't impact my review in any way.

My one line review: Different killing method + engaging characters = a fast paced mystery.

So sit back with a warm mug of cocoa and lose yourself in a Regency Christmas Romance…

My Musings :

It's rare that I read a 4 in one novel. I say 4-in-1 because this book is about 4 love couples. I haven't read the previous books so I went in blind. I usually like reading out of order because that will help me gauge if it can be read as a standalone. In this case, I would say that though it can be read as one, it will take away from the experience.

There is history between each other which is  hinted at, frequently during the tale. I felt that inspite of covering the major parts, there might have some details missed in connection to that. So the growth of feelings felt too abrupt except in the case of Fiona.

The characters also don't have much growth but they are appropriate in their roles. The author has crammed so much in such a short space that sometimes it felt incomplete. The POVs of different protagonists are shown at different times so it did add to the depth of the book.

As a whole, I enjoyed the book inspite of the points highlighted above. The romance though sudden had me smiling and giddy with anticipation. The mystery angle added to the plot and the historical aspect had me intrigued. The book is fast paced and it ended with satisfactory results.

I find myself curious about the other members of the family. So I am sure my curiosity will have checking out the other books.

I received a copy for reviewing purposes which doesn't impact my reviewn in any way.

My one line review : A short and sweet 4 in 1 love stories.

Flynn Rutledge has something to prove. His lowly upbringing is not going to stop him from achieving his artistic dreams. This commission is the key to his future, and his partner, an unknown youth in oversized clothes who is barely old enough to shave, doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Book Blitz - Once Upon A Christmas Eve by Elizabeth Hoyt

Once Upon a Christmas Eve

(A Maiden Lane Novella)
by Elizabet Hoyt
From Forever Yours / $1.99 eBook

A heartwarming stand-alone novella from New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Hoyt!
Adam Rutledge, Viscount d’Arque, really rather loathes Christmas. The banal cheerfulness. The asinine party games. And, worst of all, the obligatory trip to the countryside. His grandmother, however, loves the holiday—and Adam loves his grandmother, so he’ll brave the fiercest snowstorm to please her. But when their carriage wheel snaps, they’re forced to seek shelter at the home of the most maddening, infuriating, and utterly beguiling woman he’s ever met . . .

Sarah St. John really rather loathes rakes. The self-satisfied smirks. The sly predatory gazes. Oh, and the constant witty banter rife with double meaning. But in the spirit of the season, she’ll welcome this admittedly handsome viscount into her home. But as the snowstorm rages, the Yule log crackles, and the tension rises, Sarah and Adam find themselves locked in a fiery, passionate kiss. If love is the true meaning of Christmas, it’s the one gift this mismatched pair can’t wait to unwrap.

Blog Tour / Book Review - Always You by Denise Grover Swank

ALWAYS YOU
by Denise Grover Swank
(November 28, 2017; Forever Mass Market Paperback; $7.99; Bachelor Brotherhood Book 3)

"Swank's fluffy, feel-good storytelling proclaims the primacy of love as a force to which everyone should surrender-the bachelors destined to star in future installments haven't got a chance." --- Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Only You

Blurb :

First love is better the second time around.

Matt Osborn had no idea coaching his five-year-old nephew's soccer team would get him so much attention from the mothers-attention he doesn't want now that he's given up on love and having a family of his own. Yep, Matt's the last of his bachelor buddies, and plans on staying that way. That is, until he finds himself face-to-face with the woman who broke his heart.

Single mom Anna paused her life in England to help her father recover from an illness. She can't afford complications, and too-hot-for-his-own-good Matt Osborn-her almost former fiancé-is definitely a complication. He's a reminder of what might have been-or should have been. That irresistible pull between them isn't over. Not even close. But if she's not careful, she'll break both their hearts . . . again.

My Musings :

I don't know where to start! I have been eyeing this author for a while now. So when I got a chance to try out her writing, I jumped! And how well I jumped into the story. I know this is a series but it can be read as a standalone. It doesn't overlap that much.

I couldn't help falling in love with Ethan and Toby. Yeah, they are the highlight of the story in addition to the never ending love Matt has for Anna. The kids were too cute and it added to the charm of the story. The romance between Matt and Anna wasn't overdone. It was perfect and light. The camaraderie between Matt and his friends was enjoyable. They were so protective of Matt and his feelings. It is not often that type of friendships are seen between guys in books.

Anna and Matt were strong in their roles. Their reasons for the past were real and didn't interfere with the plot. I liked the way the author played out the ex-husband angle and the solution for it. The book on the whole was a fast read. It was easy to follow the flow of the tale and the story rang true and warm till the end.

I am now eager to finish the earlier books in the series and to follow the author's other books too.

I received a free copy for reviewing purposes. This doesn't affect my review in any way.

My one line review : A cute but heart touching second chance romance

My Musings :

I seem to be jumping into the midst of series in the recent reads. And this one is no different. This is a first time author for me and I enjoyed the book as a standalone. Though there was a continuation to the story plot-wise and character-wise, I was able to get into the tale without prior introduction. That's one aspect I enjoyed about the book.

The protagonists are strong, stubborn and suited well to the story and each other. I loved their chemistry which is out of the charts and their honesty with each other. They just plot and meet their problems head to head. There is so much intricacy in the plot and so many side characters to keep track of and who enrich the story further.

Now you guys are wondering if I had loved it so much as implied in the earlier words, why then am I rating it as not the best read . That's because of though I enjoyed the writing - the author has injected life and passion into the story, I felt the passionate scenes were not in line with the story seriousness-wise. That's how I felt and it might vary from others' reactions. And at the end of the story, though I was interested in following the siblings' stories, I am not absolutely sure I would read them. I am still 50-50 about reading the series.

So in short, I enjoyed the few hours of relaxation with mafia intrigue but it is not enough to follow the series.

I received a free copy for reviewing purposes. This doesn't affect my review in any way.

My one line review : A enjoyable few hours of mafia intrigue.
