VOYAGERS INTO THE UNKNOWN
BY
RUCHIRA KHANNA

Blurb
In the historic Indian town of Agra, you can find a very unusual tour company, which is owned by a charming young man named Raj. Although Raj's official job is to show off the historical landmarks of Agra, including the legendary Taj-Mahal, his true mission is to heal the souls of his broken "birds," as he affectionately refers to his tour participants. His business operates purely upon word-of-mouth referrals, ensuring that all of his tour members arrive in Agra with their hearts in their hands, ready for the spiritual growth and cleansing that Raj is known to provide. Healing the hearts of the spiritually damaged can be a difficult job, and in this particular tale, Raj finds himself faced with his most challenging tour group yet. First, there is Ira, a stunningly gorgeous but fragile young woman on the brink of suicide. Next, we meet Darci and Lennard, a couple on the verge of divorce. Then there is Carl, an irritable, antisocial workaholic who has burned all of his bridges. Lastly, we meet Asha, an elderly widow who still yearns for the company and comfort of her late husband. When disaster strikes the tour group, everything is thrown into jeopardy, including lives, relationships, and Raj's very reputation as a tour guide. Raj must find a way to lift the spirits of these five special travelers, even in the face of death and despair. Venture into the unknown and discover how Raj Touristry heals the brokenhearted, one soul at a time.

My Musings:

I received a free copy in exchange for an unbiased review and this doesn't impact my review in any way.

This is a first time author for me and I went in without any expectation. The blurb was the one which caught my attention. It sounded intriguing and I was ready to read a book with more depth to it. The book ended up being a good one with memorable lessons for thought gleaned from its pages.

The starting was done in a different style of introducing each character followed by their background. So one by one I met all of them without any pause in between. The story itself was rather short. It was essentially few scenes knitted together but what holds it together is Raj, the mainstay of the story. I can't call him a protagonist because he felt more like an extension of the author who seeped into the book to get across her points.

Each character was the personification of a normal person's situation in different times and in different walks of life. So I was able to pretty well connect with their histories. But they did act a bit strangely at times in my opinion. I was expecting a journey of sorts, from the blurb, of each character through their troubles till their realization of their solution. What I got was actually quite different. It was more of a realisation of self. The whole book was based on self-realization and how to connect with self more than anything else.

Even Raj wasn't left out of the loop. He too resolved his issues at the end of the book. Overall, the ending was resolved quite well except for the death of Darci. As a story, it held my attention during the ride of the characters' emotions and feelings. The potpourri of emotions was quite intense at times. I felt it was too short though and there were large leaps of realization among the characters within a short time frame. Another irritating fact was the use of "birds" in connection with the tourists which kind of grated on my nerves. It felt too patronizing at times.

Few lines which resonated within me - "All of the humanity is suffering from one big problem, and that is a loss. However, all of us strive for one big goal as well, and that is happiness."

The author has done a good job of dealing with a complex subject and she has given some food for thought. The characters made enough impact on me to keep thinking about them even after the last page of the book was turned.

My rating : 3.5/5
