Blurb :
Perfect for fans of Tana French, Jane Casey and Gillian Flynn
TOO SOON TO SEE
Polished. Professional. Perfect. Dead. Respected scientist Dr Eleanor Costello is found hanging in her immaculate home: the scene the very picture of a suicide.
TOO LATE TO HIDE
DCS Frankie Sheehan is handed the case, and almost immediately spots foul play. Sheehan, a trained profiler, is seeking a murderer with a talent for death.
TOO CLOSE TO BREATHE
As Frankie strives to paint a picture of the killer, and their victim, she starts to sense they are part of a larger, darker canvas, on which the lines between the two blur.
Olivia Kiernan's debut is a bold, brilliant thriller that will keep you guessing and leave you breathless.
My Musings :
The reaction I had at the end of the book was "Oh my!" We apparently don't know our friends or colleagues or acquaintances as much as I think we do. That's what I got from the story and it stayed with me for a while, the lesson learnt and the "gory" details. I say gory because private lives seem to be full of brutal lies. And wow what a convoluted plot of brutality in the seemingly perfect lives of people!
The beginning itself was intriguing what with the so called suicide of Eleanor and the incident Frankie went through on the previous case solving. Then Frankie finds something not quite fitting in with the investigation of Eleanor's "suicide" which leads to a look into pretty messed up characters and their lives.
The author was able to draw me into Frankie, the main character. I felt her frustration, guilt, terror and sadness and that's what made it a not so dry read. There were lots of emotions involved both from Frankie and the victims. The author played the story well with keeping me engrossed in the goings on as well as getting me jittery enough to feel the fear which is so immersed in the pages of the book.
The sadistic nature of the antagonist was pretty prevalent and it took a while to figure out the identity of the killer. And to know that the victims weren't that innocent was enough to make me disdain human nature. Humans are their own talismans and curses in turn.
The author has delivered a taut and pacy thriller which very much had my attention without waning. I will definitely recommend this book if you are not queasy reading about the perverse nature of humans.
I received a copy for reviewing purposes. Thanks to the blog tour organizer, Random things Tours and the publisher, Quercus Books.
My one line review : An impossibly convoluted plot of secret lives and lies behind masks.
My rating : 4.5/5
My reread factor : 3/5
