She wants to escape her present . . .
When Clara Mayfield helps her sister elope, she’s prepared for the scandal to seal her fate as a spinster. What she doesn’t expect is to find herself engaged to the vile Baron Rutherford as a means of salvaging her family’s reputation. Determined not to be chained to a man she loathes, Clara slips out of Essex and sheds her identity: she becomes Helen, maid at the Earl of Ashworth’s country estate. After all, below stairs is the last place anyone would think to look for an heiress . . .
He wants to forget his past . . .
William, Lord Ashworth, is attempting to rebuild his life after the devastating accident that claimed the lives of his entire family, save his beloved sister and niece. Haunted by memories of what was and determined to live up to the title he never expected to inherit, William doesn’t have time for love. What he needs is a noble and accomplished wife, one who can further the Ashworth line and keep the family name untarnished . . .
Together, can they find the perfect future?
From their first encounter, the attraction between them is undeniable. But Clara knows William is falling for Helen, a woman who doesn’t even exist. The question is, if she reveals the truth about her identity, can she trust the broken William to forgive her lie and stand by her side when scandal—and the baron—inevitably follow her to his door?

My Musings :
At the first glance of the blurb, I was intrigued by Clara's plight more than William's. I was interested to see how she fares in the world of the servants and I have always loved a regency anyway so I was all set to gobble up this book.
The first few chapters weren't a surprise because they were revealed in the blurb.Yes, I felt that could have been avoided. Still, I enjoyed getting to know Clara and William personally. And one thing I found was that both of them weren't stuffy. They were warm and so real instead of being stiff in their lives. Though I loved that fact about them, there were few instances where I felt they didn't fit in with the regency times. And there were few happenings which also weren't in sync with the period. I will get to them in a minute.
Coming to the characters, Clara was a delight with her romantic nature and I especially liked her scenes interacting with the servants. And in turn, William felt a tiny bit stuffy when dealing with Clara but that's because of his attraction to her. Otherwise, he was a bit moody and delightful to watch in his fight with his heart. Other supporting characters like Evanston and William's sister were lovely in their personalities. And I am quite looking forward to their story.
The romance was the right touch , neither too soft or too hot. Now talking about the time period irregularities, the way William's sister calls Clara up from the servants' quarters often isn't done at all. There were a few others like this one interspersed throughout and it took a bit away from the story since I love reading about Regency times as much as the romance in it.
But if you ask me if I would read more of this author's books, my answer would be a definite YES! because I like her writing style and the other pair has made me interested enough to read their story when available.
I received a copy voluntarily for reviewing purposes which doesn't impact the review in any way.
My one line review : A regency with warm protagonists.
My rating : 4/5
My reread factor : 3.5/5
