Blurb :
All the missing victims of North Carolina’s deadliest serial killer have been found, all except Rachel Smith. When the FBI produces a photo proving Rachel is alive and well in Texas, one case is closed but another one is opened. Either this is a case of mistaken identity or there are more people than just Sloan Jordan and Warren Parish who seem to walk the earth without a soul.
Along with Detective Nathan McNamara, Sloan and Warren travel south to find Rachel and solve the biggest mystery of all: determining who—or what—they really are.
My Musings :
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
The book picks up right where it left off in the first book. This book had more paranormal elements than the previous one. I believe this book to be better than the first. Read on to know why.
Firstly, the characters become more realistic in their relationships. The author creates a triangle of tense moments of passion and attraction among Sloan, Warren and Nathan. The characters were better in this part of the story. Sloan has become more invested in her parental identity and this forms the bulk of the tale. Secondly, the vivid imagery created by the author's writing style had me turning the pages faster. It was super easy to visualize the scenes and the action parts clearly and this led to a satisfactory read.
The romance aspect was pretty hot between Sloan and Warren. I am sort of uncomfortable about the attraction between Nathan and Sloan and the ending doesn't help either. The paranormal parts had more center stage this time around. The background information about people like Sloan and Warren and the different politics behind it all made for a compelling read.
I had one issue with the ending. It wasn't to my satisfaction and then the big cliffhanger had me pouting. The author knows how to reel her readers in and I believe that the third book will also be a much awaited read.
My rating : 4.5/5
