Sink

by M.E. Rhines
(Mermaid Royalty #1)
Publication date: July 31st 2017
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Synopsis:
Obedience has always been a matter of survival for sixteen-year-old mermaid princess Pauline. Her mother is the tyrannical Queen Calypso, who rules the kingdom of Atargatis with an iron trident. To utter one word against her would mean banishment—or worse—so Pauline bites her tongue and minds her manners. But on the eve of her sister’s merling-shower, all of that is about to change. Confronted with the truth about what happens to the human men who are betrothed to the mermaids of Atargatis, Pauline realizes she can stay silent no more.

Determined to end the queen’s dark tradition, Pauline goes along on a search for shipwreck survivors, secretly planning to free them. But things get complicated when she finds herself inexplicably drawn to one of the men. Before she realizes what’s happening, she has kissed him—and a kiss from a mermaid is not without consequences. Now Pauline will have to risk everything if she is to save the young man and thwart the queen’s dark plans…

“Sure, okay. Let me just climb on your back and ride you like a whale.” He laughed at his own joke, but I just planted my fists on my hips.

“That’s exactly what you’re going to do.”

“Ha! That’s a good one.”

“I’m serious, Eddie. Mermaids are a lot stronger than we look.”

Eddie clenched his jaw and looked away. “I can’t do that, Pauline. I’m the man here. I don’t take piggy-back rides from princesses.”

“Good Poseidon.” I let out an animalistic growl. “You humans are so infuriating. Look, I get that where you come from the women are delicate and you do everything for them, like opening their doors and carrying their purses.” I held out my satchel, my way of showing it was me carrying the load and not him. “Down here, though, it’s different. We rule the ocean. Mermaids build the walls, make the rules, and get everything done. Stop being a chauvinistic piece of krill and let me help you.”

“I am not chauvinistic.” His tone was stern, but his mouth twitched, threatening to reveal his amusement. “I’m independent. There’s a difference.”

“You can’t afford to be independent in the ocean. Surviving down here means working together. You help me where I lack, and I’ll do the same for you.”

“Sounds like a good deal. Except, you’re still not carrying me. That’s too far out of my comfort zone. I’ll walk.”

“You’re either going to kill yourself from exhaustion or it’s going to take us two days to get there instead of two hours.”

“We better get moving then. I’m pretty anxious to see which it’ll be.” Eddie winked at me, and the burning anger creeping up the back of my neck receded in an instant.

I chewed on my lip, mumbling some pretty ugly words under my breath as he laughed. “Fine,” I said. “I have an idea.”

I pinched my thumb and index finger together, pressed them against my lips, and blew. A loud, high-pitched whistle sliced through the water. A second later, I blew again, and then a third time.

He cocked his head, watching me with furrowed brows. “What’re you doing?”

“Calling us a ride.”

“What—like a taxi?”

“What’s a taxi?”

“You know, big yellow car with a horrible driver inside who can’t speak English.”

“A car? Oh, wait. I think I’ve heard of that. It has four wheels, moves by itself?”

“That’s it.”

“I’ll never understand why you don’t just walk where you need to go. It seems unhealthy to live so sedentary.”

“Not everything is close by. Sometimes, the supermarket is like, ten miles away.

“So, you build things within walking distance. There isn’t anything we need outside swimming range.”

“Then what about this ride you’re calling? Must’ve used it before to know about it.”

I shook my head, searching the ocean for a sign of movement. “I’ve never used him for travel, just for fun.”

“Whoa, whoa. Him?”

An eruption of bubbles in the distance caught my eye, and a flutter of excitement burst in my chest. I waved at the shiny grey blob. Realizing it was me, the dolphin whistled and clicked so eloquently one might mistake it for chatter.

He swam right into me, sending me backward with his weight. I grabbed his dorsal fin, and he spun us in dizzy circles as I hugged him. When I finally let go, the seafloor wobbled. Eddie’s outline swayed from side to side, and then settled straight once I regained my balance.

“Um.” Eddie’s jaw hung open as he looked over my dolphin friend, half-fearful, half-dumbstruck. “What. Is. That?”

Somehow, even clueless looked good on him. “This is Mort. He’s my friend.”

Blog Tour / Book Musings - Bliss by Lynsay Sands

Welcome to the blog tour of Bliss by Lynsay Sands. I am your host today and I am reviewing it for my stop.

Bliss

By: Lynsay Sands
Releasing July 25, 2017
Avon

Blurb

No one blends humor and sensuality like New York Times bestselling author Lynsay Sands in this captivating story of feuding nobles forced to marry…and destined to fall in love

Love thy neighbor, ’tis said. A fine idea, except when the neighbor in question is Lord Holden. Lady Helen Tiernay has complained frequently about his treatment of his people. Too frequently perhaps, for the king intends to curb their constant bickering by ordering them to wed. Helen can’t refuse a royal decree, but she’ll do everything possible to drive away her devilishly attractive husband-to-be.

Holden has faced all manner of horrors on the battlefield. But marriage to “the tyrant of Tiernay” is still a worrying prospect—until he glimpses Helen in the flesh. What flesh it is…soft, lush, made for his touch. If she weren’t so intent on thinking up devious ways to prevent consummating their bond, Helen would see how perfect they are together, and that a marriage begun as enemies can turn to absolute pleasure.

My Musings :

I have already read a couple of Lynsay Sands' books in the past. So I was pretty happy to find a chance to take part in the blog tour. Though I was familiar with her style, each of her books is different. And it's been more than 5 years since I last read her books. So I was a bit nervous when starting the book. I believe now that I needn't have worried. She is as awesome as my memory.

The prologue set the stage with an intriguing marriage proposal by the King. And thus started the story of getting-one-over of Helen and Holden. The author has the perfect mix of romance and humour in the tale. The romance is sweet and hot in turns. Oh the way they protest! This is one of my favourite pairing with their stubbornness and penchant for mischief. There were so many scenes where I laughed out loud. Their antics brought lots of fun to me and this is something I cherish. It's rare to find an author who does fun properly.

The characters are no less entertaining in their innate sense. Helen is sweet but gutsy with her plan to foil the wedding. Holden is such a guy but with a soft heart. The side characters add their own slant to the protagonists, highlighting their traits and the story.

The story flowed so easily and I was mesmerized enough to lose myself completely in it. The sense of mystery about the person who ordered such villainous acts adds to the book's allure. I have to say that the author has done a commendable job with her explanation for the villain's acts. Though I found that it was easy to guess the antagonist's identity, the whys was complicated enough to keep my attention.

I am once again a fan of Lynsay Sands and I am itching to reread the books I read way back and to continue reading her newer books too. I can recommend her books to historical romance fans with absolute certainty!

I received a copy for reviewing purposes. I voluntarily review it without any bias. These are all my own thoughts on the book.

My one line review : A romance with mischievous protagonists who make you laugh out loud!

My rating : 5/5

My reread factor : 4/5

Meet the Author :

Lynsay Sands is the nationally bestselling author of the Argeneau/Rogue Hunter vampire series, as well as numerous historicals and anthologies. She's been writing stories since grade school and considers herself incredibly lucky to be able to make a career out of it. Her hope is that readers can get away from their everyday stress through her stories, and if there's occasional uncontrollable fits of laughter, that's just a big bonus.

The Importance of Being Scandalous

Tale of Two Sisters #1
By: Kimberly Bell
Releasing July 25, 2017

Blurb

A horse race in trousers on Rotten Row. Visiting a gaming hall in a dress that would make her mother faint. Sneaking an invitation to a masquerade ball attended by only the wickedest, most debauched members of society…

None of these things are scaring off bookish but strong-willed Amelia Bishop’s stuffy, egotistical fiancĂ©.

The only thing left is to entice childhood friend Nicholas Wakefield into a truly engagement-ending scandal. The Wakefields are the height of propriety, and Nicholas’s parents have made it clear a wife from the neighboring Bishop family would be unacceptable…

But Nicholas would give up his family and his fortune if Amelia would ever see him as more than just a childhood friend. He’ll go along with her scheme, even if it means ruining them both, because he’s got a plan that will change her mind about him being merely the boy next door.

My Musings :

Red has always been my favourite colour. So the cover had my eyes transfixed and had me reading the blurb. Seeing that it has a friends-to-lovers theme, I was interested to read the book. This is the first time I am reading a book of Kimberly Bell so I was pretty happy to find that I loved it!

The characters are so engaging and witty. Amelia is strong and bold. She is such an innocent in certain ways. I loved her support of her sister, Julia. I didn't like Nicholas much in the starting. He seems more of a coward but he grows into the man he is supposed to be. As for the secondary characters, Julia made my heart weep with her plight. But she also got me in her corner because of her strength. Another person who had my attention is Jasper. Both of them were simply delightful in their roles.

A story needs a strong antagonist to make it a hit. In this case, I loved Embry's character because of the way it adds to the shenanigans in the tale. I hated him because of his psycho mind. In addition to it, the familial bond between Amelia and Julia is another highlight which had me invested in their tale. The story is also fast paced with the various antics which kept me entertained. The flow of scenes is smooth and the dialogue is easy to follow. The only part I didn't like much was Nicholas's cowardice in certain parts and there was also a certain discrepancies in connection with the Regency times. The romance was both sweet and hot in turns. I had no problem getting in sync with their love.

Right now, I am looking forward to Julia's story and I think she and Jasper will make a superb pair. Oh I can just imagine! All in all, this was a delightful story which runs the gamut of emotions.

I received a copy for reviewing purposes. I have voluntarily reviewed it and the thoughts are my own and is not influenced in any way.

My one line review : A delighfully witty romance with loveable characters.

My rating : 4.5/5

My reread factor : 4/5

Trailer

Excerpt

“May I help you?” he asks, his smile tight like it’s forced. Struggling to find my voice, I finally respond. “Aiden Sheffield?” “Guilty. Are you here to adopt?” “No.” The pit bull whines at that. Without taking his eyes off me, Aiden pulls out a plastic bag from his pocket and throws him a treat. Unable to keep staring at him, my gaze shifts down. I get a good look at Aiden’s pal. The dog’s tail wags, but only one of his ears perks. The other ear is completely missing, and the poor boy’s jaw is misshapen. Aiden draws my attention back to him. “You’re making my pack nervous.”

That’s exactly what they look like…a pack. A family where he is the alpha. All the dogs have now come toward the fence, sitting in a straight line. They seem calm but curious as they flip their heads between us. “They don’t look nervous.”

“They are. They can smell your fear. They won’t hurt you.”

“I know.”

“Then what are you afraid of?”

You.

He smirks, moving forward so we are only inches from each other, separated by the chain-link fence. His gaze lingers on me, far too long for comfort. He smells masculine, of soap and sweat and something distinctively him. “Who are you, mystery girl? Too old to be selling cookies, too young to be from the Gazette, and too innocent to be spouting religion.”

“I’m Emma Cooper. Angela’s daughter.” It’s a flicker in his features, but I catch the scowl before it disappears. The dogs start surrounding Aiden and stare at me with suspicion. It’s as if they are protecting him…from me.

“What do you want?” His tone is curt, almost demanding. I shift from foot to foot.

“Can we talk?” The dogs stand at attention now.

“Go to the house and wait for me.” He snaps the words like a command.

“Um…”

“Now.”

Blog Tour / Book Musings - Just me, The Sink and The Pot by Sudesna Ghosh

JUST ME, THE SINK & THE POT
by
Sudesna Ghosh

Blurb

Meet Pamela, an overweight girl who's looking back at her school days. From longing for a Valentine to dealing with a sibling who hates her, Pamela has a lot to deal with. She even has a special bunch of friends at home who she can turn to - but they aren't the kind of friends you'd expect. Life sucks when you're fat. Can Pamela ever be happy?

Read an excerpt of the book here...

One day a classmate asked me, “Where is your lunch?” I told her that I had already had it and went back to my fake laughter and smiles. The others chatted and laughed while they ate from their tiffin boxes. Some brought samosas or ice cream from outside the gate. My hunger pangs got worse as I saw all the food and smelt the delicious odours around me.

The ice cream cart was run by a sweet old man who knew me since I’d started school. He would ask me some days, “Child, you don’t want your favourite orange stick?” I would say no thank you and smile before running away from him and his cart. One day he seemed to be desperate to make me have an ice cream. “Child! Come here and have an ice cream. You don’t have to pay me,” he called out. I smiled, turned around and went to hide in an empty classroom. Two minutes later, I shrieked; the old man had found me. He was carrying a dripping ice cream for me. I started laughing. Then I started running away from him. The old man started running after me!

My classmates were shocked. The sports teacher was happy to see me run for the first time – I had never run before because fat moves when you run. Everybody would laugh. The lunch break ended with me accepting the mostly melted orange stick from the kind ice cream man. We were too tired to talk about the whole event. But it did make me a bit popular that year, with the school Yearbook including the story and a picture of me running away from a 6 feet tall man holding an ice cream.

Book Musings :

I confess that I had overlooked this book at the beginning because of the cover. Yeah, I know I am being superficial but I can't help it at times. So you are asking why I picked it up? It's solely because of the blurb. It had me thinking about the book and I had to know if Pamela was happy at the end. In hindsight, I am glad that I came across it. Now I have no words to describe what it has evoked in me. I will try my best though!

When I started the book, I didn't realise that it was in a style similar to the diary format. I am not used to it much. Except for The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank, I hadn't read any in this form. So it took a bit to get into it. But  as soon as I got enmeshed in Pamela's heart, I wouldn't have it in any other form.

The story is about Pamela and her everyday struggles as a fat kid. It deals with body shaming and bullying. Kudos to the author to be gutsy enough to write on these psychologically important issues. The way the author has dealt with the sensitive material in the form of a first hand account of a girl who is deemed not normal by her peers is commendable. This resonated within me because seriously who hasn't felt what Pamela experiences. I can see a bit of me in her and I feel every teen would feel that way except for those who were perfect which I doubt anyone could be. The flow is easy  and the language is simple. It is a fast read which touched my heart in so many ways. The wry humour had me smiling with tears in the eyes. It is at once funny and poignant. It had me thinking late into the night.

I have always felt that Anne Frank's Diary has to be read by people of all ages and I feel the same way about this book too! This is a must read for everyone especially teenagers. It would help in making the kids realise how much impact they have on their peers and how deep it can be.

The only thing which doesn't make the book a full 5 star read for me is the ending. Though it had a sudden twist, it was rather abrupt. I was seriously thinking the author would end it with a Pamela who would find her one and look back with nostalgia. I did like the ending with Pamela's realisation that it's okay to be different but it was just too abrupt for my tastes. Other than that, I applaud the author on a book well written!

My one line review : A must read for everyone especially teenagers

My rating : 4.5/5

My reread factor : 3/5

“Um…”

“Now.”

Book Musings :

I almost passed over this book because of the book cover. I don't know why but it just didn't catch my attention. It felt a bit plain and even after reading the book,I can't get it to sync with the story for me. But the blurb hinted in so many ways at a mystery in the tale that I was tempted to get my hands on it. And wow, the author has delivered an emotionally impacting book.

A bit of warning, guys, this book deals with abuse and there are so many triggers throughout the book. So be careful while reading it. If you are fine with sensitive material, you have to read this book. I recommend it strongly. I haven't read MK Schiller's other books so I went in blind but I can see myself reading this author in the future though with a bit of caution.

As for reviewing the book, I don't even know where to start. The story itself is a very impacting one. The way the author has dealt with the subject is pretty good. And the story alone doesn't make the book. The characters and their reactions to their pasts and the journey they undertake to the future make the story an unforgettable one. The history of abuse highlighted is detailed enough to get me immersed in the pain. I felt as if I was there beside them during the scenes.

The story is told in both of the protagonists',Emma and Aiden, POV. This is my favourite type so I was pretty happy to deal with their thoughts and feelings. And this also made me fall for them because I totally could understand their actions. It was a roller coaster ride of emotions for me. It made me sad, angry and happy as I read the book. At the end, I was sure I was smiling, happy with the way the author has dealt with the horrific antagonist. Wow, I never knew such a villain. It sure makes me wonder at the human mind and the way humans can be animalistic.

As emotionally trapping as the book was, there were the love scenes which kind of didn't go with the flow of the story. I felt as if they weren't relevant to the tale and I could have done without them in such detail. Another part which I felt detracted a tiny bit from the book was the side journey they took on the way to Linx. I was wondering what was the point when reading it.

The story's pace was aligned well with the content. My mind didn't wander at any point and the twists and turns and detours the story took were hard hitting and kept me occupied till the end. As far as I am concerned the author delivered way beyond what she promised with the blurb.

I voluntarily received an ARC for reviewing purposes and this doesn't affect my review in any way. These are my thoughts on the book.

My one line review : A poignantly hopeful love story with a hint of mystery.

My rating : 4.5/5

My reread factor : 4/5

Author Bio

Not knowing a word of English, MK Schiller came to America at the age of four from India. Since then, all she’s done is collect words. After receiving the best gift ever from her parents—her very own library card—she began reading everything she could get her greedy hands on. At sixteen, a friend asked her to make up a story featuring the popular bad boy at school. This wasn’t fan fiction…it was friend fiction. From that day on, she’s known she wanted to be a writer. With the goal of making her readers both laugh and cry, MK Schiller has penned more than a dozen books, each one filled with misfit characters overcoming obstacles and finding true love.
